16 Glastonbury Alternatives for 2019

Sunday morning saw the very last of Glastonbury’s 135,000 tickets sell out, with the final resale lasting just 10 minutes.

As always, the demand massively outweighed the supply, leaving many thousands (including me) looking elsewhere for our festival fix.

Fortunately for all of us, there are hundreds of other family-friendly, multi-genre festivals taking place across the UK this summer, many of which give Glasto more than a run for its money, in terms of both music and value.

Here, in no particular order, are sixteen of the best…

ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL

13 – 16 June 2019

Newport, Isle Of Wight

In terms of musical heritage, IoW is one of the few festivals in the world that comes close to Glastonbury.

The legendary 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, which attracted more than 600,000 people with a lineup featuring Jimi Hendrix, The Who and The Doors, is still regarded as one of music’s most iconic gatherings.

After more than 20 years without an event, IoW returned in 2002 and has since hosted the likes of David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Muse, Coldplay, Jay-Z and Queen.

Having celebrated its 50th Anniversary last summer, the festival returns with Noel Gallagher, George Ezra and Biffy Clyro this June.

KENDAL CALLING

Hackthorpe, Cumbria

Set in the Lake District’s picturesque Lowther Deer Park, Kendal Calling boasts one of the UK’s most beautiful festival settings.

Often described as a ‘mini-Glastonbury’, the 25,000 capacity festival ticks all the boxes when it comes to music, arts, and entertainment.

Performances range from huge headlining shows on the Main Stage through to intimate gigs at the Tim Peaks Diner, which has hosted acoustic sets from the likes of Pete Doherty, Nick Hayward, and Edwin Collins. On top of that, there are multiple late-night arenas to take you right through until the early hours.

There’s plenty to keep the little ones entertained too, with the ‘Kids Calling’ area featuring fun activities for children of all ages.

This year’s festival will feature headlining performances from Chic ft Nile Rodgers, Doves and Courteeners.

Shambala is one of the UK’s favourite family-friendly festivals, taking place annually in a ‘secret’ Northamptonshire location.

In addition to the 200+ music acts spread across the main stages and dance arenas, there’s a huge kids area, creative workshops, carnivals, fancy dress and huge open spaces to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Like Glasto, the easy-going festival doesn’t separate the music arenas from the campsites – so you’re free to carry your warm cans of cider to and from the main stages as you please!
